History

Shelby County, Tennessee was established in 1819 from hunting grounds originally belonging to Chickasaw Indians. It is named in honor of first governor of Kentucky and Revolutionary War hero Isaac Shelby. Memphis is the county seat, and is located in the southwest corner of Tennessee along the Mississippi River on the Chickasaw Bluff. Memphis is the largest city in the state of Tennessee. Memphis was established in 1820, and was named in honor of the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River.
